Wedding ceremony music: what to play, when
The processional, the signing of the register, the recessional, each has a job to do. Here's what works at Irish church and civil ceremonies, with song ideas that don't sound like every other wedding video.
The four ceremony music moments
Most Irish wedding ceremonies have four distinct music slots, in order:
- Prelude. 10-15 minutes of music as guests are seated. Soft, ambient, conversational.
- Processional: the bride's or couple's entrance. 2-3 minutes. The whole room is watching.
- Signing of the register. 1-2 songs (4-6 minutes total) while the legal paperwork is signed. The room is quiet and listening; this is where live musicianship shines.
- Recessional: the couple's exit. 2-3 minutes. Tempo lifts. Confetti.
Processional song picks
The single most-watched 2 minutes of the day. The song should match the tempo of the walk, leave room for the moment to land, and not have lyrics that hijack attention.

Irish church vs civil ceremony rules
Catholic and Church of Ireland
Most Irish Catholic and Church of Ireland celebrants are flexible on music, but typically request that songs during the actual sacrament (the vows themselves) be reverent. Pop songs are usually fine for processional, signing, and recessional. Always confirm with your celebrant in advance, because they're the final word on what's allowed in their building.
Civil ceremonies (registrar)
Civil ceremonies in Ireland (registrar's office or external civil-ceremony venue) have no religious music restrictions. Any song goes. The registrar may ask you to keep the ceremony under a specific time, so pick songs that fit the schedule.
Spiritualist / humanist ceremonies
Full freedom on music. These ceremonies often have more music slots (3-4 song breaks) and reward couples who treat music as part of the ceremony's structure.
How MusicAngel covers ceremony music
Acoustic ceremony coverage is a standard paid add-on to any evening band package. Typically a stripped-down configuration of the band, vocalist plus guitarist for most settings, or an acoustic trio for larger churches and outdoor ceremonies. Adding ceremony music to your evening band package usually costs €300-€500 extra.
