How to choose your first dance song

Three things to know before you commit:

  1. Lyrics matter more than melody. The melody is what guests notice; the lyrics are what you'll remember. Read them carefully before you commit.
  2. Choreographing is optional and usually a mistake. Couples who try a full routine in front of a 180-guest room almost always wish they'd just held hands.
  3. Brief the band on timing. Most live bands can shorten a 4-minute song to 3 with a clean ending, but only if you ask in advance.

Frequently asked questions

What's the most popular first dance song for weddings?

Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" has been the most-requested first dance at Irish weddings since 2017. Other consistent picks: "Thinking Out Loud" (Ed Sheeran), "At Last" (Etta James), "Make You Feel My Love" (Adele or Bob Dylan), and "Tenerife Sea" (Ed Sheeran).

How long should a first dance song be?

Two and a half to three and a half minutes is the sweet spot. Songs longer than four minutes start to feel long for guests watching; many couples ask the band to fade out at a natural point if their chosen song is longer.

Will the band learn our first dance song?

Yes. MusicAngel bands include one new song specifically for the couple as part of every package, typically the first dance. We'll confirm the chosen song at booking and have it rehearsed for the day.

Should the first dance be slow or upbeat?

Either works. A slow first dance keeps the moment intimate; an upbeat first dance gets the dance floor moving immediately. Increasingly couples choose a slow first dance and have the band transition into something upbeat to invite guests onto the floor.

Can we choreograph our first dance?

You can, but most couples who try it wish they hadn't. A simple slow dance with a few pre-planned moments (a turn, a dip, a kiss) reads better in photos and feels more honest than a learned routine.

Should the first dance song be a song neither of us has heard before?

Generally no, it should be a song with meaning to both of you. The first dance is one of the few moments in the wedding day that's just for the two of you; sharing a song you already love makes it feel like that.
