When to Book a Wedding Band in Ireland: 2026 Timing Guide
12-18 months ahead for peak Saturdays. Earlier is better. Here's exactly how the Irish wedding-band booking calendar works, and what happens if you leave it too late.
The short answer
12-18 months ahead for peak season Saturdays (May-September). Earlier is better. The best Irish wedding bands and venues often get booked 18-24 months in advance.
Why so far ahead?
Irish wedding bands typically play one wedding per Saturday in peak season, sometimes two if Friday and Saturday, but the strongest acts saturate fast. Couples who shop too late find their preferred band already booked. The cascade effect: you settle for the next-best, who is often noticeably weaker.
Booking timeline by wedding date
Peak summer Saturday (May-September)
18 months ahead is the safe-zone. 24 months ahead is normal for popular Saturdays in June, July, and August. If you have a specific band in mind for a peak Saturday, enquire the moment you have a date.
Shoulder season (April / October)
12 months ahead. Less competition, more flexibility, but still book early to lock in your first choice.
Off-peak (November-March, excluding NYE)
6-9 months ahead is fine. Many top bands have availability in off-peak and may offer slightly reduced rates.
Sunday or midweek wedding
9-12 months ahead. Most bands prefer Saturdays so Sundays/midweek have more options for shorter notice.
New Year's Eve
18-24 months ahead. The single most-competitive booking date of the year. Both bands and venues book very early.
Christmas Day / Boxing Day weddings
Almost unheard of in Ireland, and most bands don't take these. If you're planning one, ask early and expect a small premium.
What happens if you book late?
- 3-6 months ahead: You'll have some choice but the top-tier bands will be unavailable. Mid-tier and lesser-known acts still likely available.
- 2-3 months ahead: Very limited choice. Most bookings at this stage are couples whose first-choice band cancelled.
- Under 2 months ahead: Bottom-tier or last-minute acts only. Almost always a downgrade from what you'd have got booking earlier.
The "ask three bands" trap
Many couples enquire with three bands and ask them to hold the date while they decide. Don't. Holding dates without commitment burns the band's calendar and reduces your goodwill if you ultimately want them. The right move:
- Compare bands online. Read reviews, watch showreels, see them live if a showcase is available.
- Have a preference order before you enquire.
- Send the enquiry to your first-choice. If they're available, book.
- Only if they're unavailable, move to your second choice.
Deposit + contract timeline
- Enquiry to first response: 24-48 hours for reputable Irish bands. MusicAngel responds within one working day.
- Booking confirmation: Same week as enquiry, once both sides agree the package and date.
- Deposit: Typically €500-€1,000, paid within 1-2 weeks of confirming.
- Balance: Paid 4-8 weeks before the wedding.
- Song list + setlist finalisation: 4-6 weeks before.
What you need before enquiring
- Your wedding date.
- Your venue (or shortlist of 2-3 venues).
- Approximate guest count.
- The MusicAngel band you prefer (or "not sure, recommend"; see our comparison).
- Any specific extras you want: ceremony music, drinks reception music, late-night extension.
You do NOT need to have decided on your first dance, song list, or full setlist before you enquire, because that gets finalised closer to the day.
